What is a proclamation?

A proclamation is an official document issued by Governor Kristi Noem to commemorate a specific time period (day, week, or month) for the purpose of raising awareness about an issue or celebrating milestones.

How to Request a Proclamation

• A proclamation may be requested via the online form below.
• Please submit your request three to four weeks before it is needed to allow adequate time for your request to be considered.
• In order to better determine whether a request can be fulfilled, please provide a draft of the proclamation. A sample proclamation is attached below. Please use the template to complete your draft.
• If a proclamation has been issued in the past, a new request still needs to be requested each year.
• Preference will be given to in-state requestors.

Proclamations must convey a statewide significance to a broad group of South Dakotans.

Proclamations are generally considered for the following:

• To raise public awareness about issues affecting a large number of South Dakota residents. This must be specific to South Dakota and have a statewide significance.
• To commemorate special milestones of significance to South Dakota's history or cultural heritage.

Proclamations can be viewed online for public review through the Secretary of State's website.

The Governor's office reserves the right to modify or deny any proclamation request.
Proclamations will be processed on a month-by-month basis.
